Marauding Vikings, armored knights, war, Tsars and Empresses, rockets and Communism are all part of the heritage of the Baltic. The new book Baltic Sagas—Events and Personalities that Changed the World! presents tales of strong-willed men and women, courage, love, murder, greed, seduction and intrigue.

The book, by author Karl Heinze, takes an intriguing look at the Baltic Sea Region and its important parts in history.

“This is not a comprehensive history of the region, but I have selected events and personalities that were important to the area and had an interesting story,” Heinze explained. “I have included several scenes throughout the book that are based on historical events, but to which I have sometimes added reasonable assumptions as to dialogue and incidents.”

The stories focus on such events as The Crusades, the Hanseatic League, Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, the Winter War of 1939, the beginning of the Space Age and the fall of Soviet Communism.

Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, U.S. Ambassador to Finland, said “Baltic Sagas” contributes “to our understanding of some of history’s most influential personalities.

Baltic Sagas—Events and Personalities that Changed the World! adds to the growing awareness of the importance of the Baltic Sea Region,” McElveen-Hunter said. “Of particular interest are the stories about some of the women of the area – the Lottas, who contributed so much in Finland’s Winter War, Queen Margaret, who united Denmark, Norway and Sweden, and Queen Jadwiga, whose sacrifices helped defeat her countries enemies.”

Heinze, who holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Harvard University, has traveled to over 80 countries around the globe. In addition to writing, Heinze is a photographer whose work has been exhibited around the New York area.

Baltic Sagas—Events and Personalities that Changed the World! is available in softcover (ISBN 1-58939-498-4) from Virtualbookworm.com, Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com. The book can also be ordered from most bookstores around the United States and the United Kingdom.
